Section 8 Graphic

The City of Marshalltown administers the HUD Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program in Marshall, Tama and Hardin Counties. This is a rental assistance program that uses HUD funding to assist households with paying their ongoing rent based on their monthly income. This is NOT an emergency assistance program. Currently the program has a short waiting period for households that meet the following preferences.

  • Applicants that include an elderly or disabled head of household, or
  • Applicants that include a minor child in the household, and
  • Applicants that currently live in Marshall, Tama or Hardin County.

Applicants that do not meet the preferences may still apply to be placed on the waiting list. All applicants must meet general eligibility criteria including maximum income guidelines and criminal history guidelines. Those living outside of the program jurisdiction area may have a longer waiting period as well as households that do not include either an elderly person, person with disabilities or child under the age of 18.

The City relies on private landlords to participate in the program. The City does not own any rental housing units directly. The City of Marshalltown is an Equal Housing Opportunity service provider.

Visit the City of Marshalltown website to print a copy of the application.

Applications must include all applicable identification documents including:

  • Birth certificates for all household members,
  • Social Security cards for all household members,
  • Photo ID for all adult household members (18 years of age and over)
  • Any applicable immigration documentation.
