A new twist on the common grandparent scam. This has happened in Iowa. The scam plays out something like this.
You receive a call telling you a relative (grandchild, child, etc.) has been involved in a motor vehicle crash. Your relative has been accused of being a hit and run driver and the caller tells you that you must bond your relative out immediately. The caller then makes arrangements to send someone to meet with you to collect the "bond money".
This is a scam! DO NOT fall for this. If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone. Call the relative who was allegedly involved in the crash and confirm with them they do not need help. Call another family member to ask them for help. Call law enforcement for help. Whatever you do, do not give anyone money and do not give anyone your personal financial information.
Law enforcement agencies and government agencies will never cold call you, ask you for money, and make arrangements to come meet you to collect the money. These calls can seem real. They can be very convincing. It is a trick and the caller is trying to steal from you.
