On Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at approximately 9:20 p.m., the Marshalltown Police Department responded with Unity Point Ambulance and the Marshalltown Fire Department to the 400 block of Union Street after receiving reports of a shooting incident at this location. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim (age 22) suffering from gunshot wounds. This victim was critically injured and died on scene. A second male (age 27) was also found on scene with gunshot injuries. The second victim was transported to Unity Point Hospital in Marshalltown for treatment.
The victims are identified as:
Johnqwez Deanthony Lewis, age 22, of Marshalltown. Mr. Lewis died during this incident.
Devonte Allen Brooks, age 27 of Marshalltown. Mr. Brooks is no longer hospitalized.
Chief of Police Michael Tupper stated, “My thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their family members. Violent crime will not be permitted to go unchecked in our community. Marshalltown is a strong community because of the people who call it home. We must all work together to address matters of mutual concern and this includes crime. We all want safe neighborhoods. We all share a responsibility for keeping our community safe. To the individual, or individuals, responsible for this cowardly act, we are coming for you. We will find you. We are working tirelessly to make sure you face a jury of your peers. Justice and accountability will be done.”
The investigation of this incident is ongoing. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Marshall County Attorney’s Office are assisting with this investigation. No arrests have been made.
