As we close out another planning process with the completion of the Downtown Master Plan with SEH, it is a great time to take a look back at previous planning efforts and see the impact community planning has on development. In 2006 the City hired RDG to complete a Downtown Plan which established a vision for downtown growth. In 2016 the City received an American Planning Association Iowa Chapter Award for implementation of that plan. Over a ten-year period, more than $90M in public/private improvements were completed in the downtown.
Other recent community planning efforts have included the Wayfinding Plan, Parks & Recreation Master Plan, the Highway 14 Corridor Study completed in 2018 by Bolton & Menk and the Iowa River Trail Placemaking Plan, which is just kicking off with RDG Planning & Design. More specialized projects such as, the Veterans Memorial Coliseum Feasibility Study, completed by GTG Companies, have spurred the redevelopment of an iconic community building.
Community plans are a critical tool in our development toolbox. As community leaders meet with developers about opportunities we are able demonstrate that we, as a community, have thought about our future and that we support a common vision. Plans need to work together and build upon each other and in order to truly be successful they must include public participation.
