[ARCHIVED] Fire Prevention Week Safety Tips

This week is Fire Prevention Week. This year, the focus is on cooking fires. Cooking fires are the #1 cause of residential fires. Don't be a statistic, follow these safety tips:

1. If cooking on the stovetop, stay in the kitchen. It is easy to become distracted and have cooking oils and grease catch fire.

2. Keep oven mits, hot pads, and towels a safe distance from the cooktop.

3. Have a lid that fits your pan close by. If a fire should start, carefully slide the lid onto the pan and turn off the burner.

4. Do not try and move the flaming pan to the sink or out a door.

5. If the fire is in the oven, do not open the door. Leave it closed and turn off the oven.

6. Do not try and extinguish the fire using water.

7.  Exiting the home should be a priority! Call 9-1-1.
