Arrest made in Hit & Run Accident
On August 10, 2023, at 1:20 p.m., the Marshalltown Police Department was called to respond to a 9-year-old child that had been struck by a vehicle near the intersection of North 6th Avenue and Union Street. When officers arrived, they attended to the injured child until emergency medical care could arrive and transport the child to UnityPoint Hospital.
Witnesses in the area advised the injured child had been riding a bicycle and was struck by a dark-colored pickup truck. The driver of the truck fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. While officers were still on scene conducting an investigation, the driver of the truck returned and was identified as Carlos Cancino-Valdez, age 57, of Marshalltown. The Marshalltown Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
On September 18th, 2023 Carlos Cancino-Valdez was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Injury, a Class-D Felony.
(A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.)
