On Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 11:51pm, a Marshalltown police officer stopped a vehicle on Lincoln Street near North Center Street for an observed traffic violation. During the traffic stop, the officer identified a juvenile male that was connected with a prior investigation. The officer subsequently observed drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two handguns. One of the handguns had been reported stolen to the Marshalltown Police Department in February 2023.
Officers arrested a 17-year-old male for possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon, and interference with official acts.
Also arrested was Raul Elias Alas, age 18, of Tama. Mr. Alas was charged with theft in the fourth degree in connection with the stolen firearm.

The investigation of this incident continues. At this time, the police department does not believe these arrests are connected to the shooting incident that occurred in Marshalltown on August 29, 2023.
(A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.)
