On May 23, 2023, the City of Marshalltown began an Automated Traffic Enforcement program by initiating a 30-day warning period to reduce excessive speeding at (2) fixed Marshalltown locations. One fixed location is on Lincoln Way near the intersection of Orchard Lane. The second location is on Governor Road near Benjamin Drive. Since May 23rd, a 30-day warning period has been initiated. Owners of vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit have received a warning notice of their speeding violation by mail. As of June 20, 2023, 1,871 excessive speed warnings have been issued. 1,236 of the violations were from the Lincoln Way location and 635 from the Governor Road location.  

 

Beginning on June 22, 2023, owners of vehicles driving more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit in both fixed locations will receive a civil notice of violation by mail, issuing a fine for excessive speed:

 

FINES:

11-20mph over: $100

21-25mph over: $150

26-30mph over: $250

30+ mph over: $400 

 

A certified Marshalltown Police Officer will review all available evidence of the speeding violation before approving that a civil infraction be mailed to the vehicle owner. 

 

Drivers will have 30 days after receiving the mailed infraction to pay the fine either by mail or through an online payment process. If a driver wishes to contest a violation they may do so in writing within 30 days of receiving the mailed citation. Drivers wishing to further contest their violation may opt to receive a written municipal infraction issued by a law enforcement officer to appear in court to have a judge review the evidence of the violation to render judgment. 

 

Records of violations and fines paid will not impact the owner of the speeding vehicle’s driving record and records will not be sent to the owner’s auto insurance company. 

 

The City of Marshalltown’s goal in implementing this program is to reduce excessive speeding on our roadways. The Marshalltown Police Department will continue to engage in traffic safety enforcement activities throughout our community.
