Marshalltown Police Department Conducting Murder Investigation

On Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 3:00pm, police officers responded to 1101 South 5th Avenue after receiving a request to conduct a welfare check at this location. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 78-year-old male had been severely beaten and needed emergency medical attention. A preliminary investigation revealed the victim had been assaulted by his adult son. The victim was transported to a medical facility for emergency care.

On January 7, 2023, police officers arrested Scott David Swartz, age 47, of Marshalltown. Swartz was charged with:

  1. Attempt to Commit Murder
  2. Domestic Abuse Assault – Second Offense
  3. Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  4. Possession of Methamphetamine – First Offense


The victim in this case, Paul Leroy Swartz, age 78, of Marshalltown, has died while receiving medical care for the injuries he suffered during this incident. The police department has contacted the Marshall County Attorney’s Office and has recommended murder charges be filed against Scott David Swartz. Scott Swartz remains incarcerated at the Marshall County Jail.
