On June 23, 2021, the Marshalltown Police Department received allegations concerning potential exploitation and inappropriate contact between an adult male and a thirteen-year-old juvenile. Further investigation revealed that the adult male has been a teacher in the Marshalltown Community School District and the juvenile has been a student in the district.

On July 7, 2021, the Marshalltown Police Department arrested Adam Eugene Edgington, age 42, of Nevada, Iowa. Mr. Edgington has been charged with Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee (Class D Felony). Mr. Edgington has been released pending a court appearance on July 12, 2021.
