On Thursday, April 22, at approximately 12:14 p.m., first responders and law enforcement responded to the 100 block of North 2nd Street in Marshalltown to investigate a reported stabbing incident. Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel found Suzanne Marie Bittner (age 51) of Marshalltown and Kenneth Charles Bittner (age 62) of Marshalltown in a yard suffering from stab wounds. Both subjects were alert and able to communicate. They did however have significant wounds to their upper torsos. Law enforcement personnel also located Kevin Dee Butts (age 24) of Marshalltown on the same scene with a minor injury. Mr. Butts told public safety officers on scene that he stabbed at least one of the victims. Mr. Butts has been detained and questioned in connection with this incident. All of these parties live together. Suzanne Bittner is Kevin Butts’ mother.
All parties were transported to a medical facility for treatment and evaluation. All parties are safe and reported to be in stable condition.
Criminal charges are pending against Mr. Butts. Mr. Butts will be charged with the following offenses. A photo of Mr. Butts is not available at this time.
- Domestic Abuse Assault – Display or Use of a Weapon (2 counts)(Aggravated Misdemeanor)
- Going Armed with Intent (Class D-Felony)
- Willful Injury – Causing Serious Injury (2 counts)(Class C-Felony)
This remains an active investigation. The Marshalltown Police Department has identified the person alleged to be responsible for these assaults. There is no danger to the public.
