On February 1, 2020 at 4:58 am, the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) responded with Marshalltown Police Department (MPD) and UnityPoint EMS to 911 Jackson Street on a reported house fire. On arrival the homeowner, who stated she was initially in the bedroom of the home, walked into the living room, found the sofa on fire, and called 9-1-1. Size-up found extensive fire on the first floor of a single-story residential structure. Crews deployed two handlines and made an interior fire attack. Shortly into the attack, it was determine the fire had extended into the attic. Crews were successful in extinguishing the main body of the fire, but access to the attic space was difficult. An aerial ladder was used to gain access to the attic and the fire was extinguished. Fire crews remained on scene for an hour and a half overhauling the building and extinguishing hot spots. No injuries were reported and at the time of this release, investigators were still on scene. The damage is estimated at $15,000.
